1、 System Overview

At present, most obstetrics and gynecology departments in hospitals generally use marking rings for mothers and infants at birth until discharge to identify them. This marking ring is a pure physical medium and is easy to replace. The current management system of the hospital does not allow families visiting babies to enter casually, and the number of visitors is limited or idle personnel are controlled to enter and exit casually. Even so, it is difficult to achieve this in actual management due to the urgent need of family members to visit the mother and baby. How to solve the problem of infant theft and prevent error reporting is an urgent technical problem for obstetrics and gynecology hospitals.

Therefore, based on the actual situation and management needs of the hospital, the hospital’s mother and baby RFID wristband management system designed using advanced Internet of Things technology is based on the principle of openness, supporting both centralized management and humanized services, and is a solution that meets the current and future development needs. It will play a significant role in the management of maternal and child identification, infant anti-theft management, and channel permission management in large comprehensive hospitals such as obstetrics and gynecology or obstetrics and gynecology hospitals.

2、 System structure

The construction of this system involves four parts: wrist strap label binding and information input, real-time monitoring platform, system security management, and HIS management system interface.

Maternal and Child Binding Configuration Management System: Provides electronic wristbands for newborns and new mothers, and binds the unique electronic tag codes of both parties, providing comprehensive query functions for alarm events, nursing records, etc; Real time monitoring platform: The platform collects wrist strap signals from various signal detectors in real time, analyzes alarm events based on pre-set monitoring logic, and immediately alarms in case of abnormalities; System security management: providing basic data, permissions, and alarm event configuration management functions for internal systems; HIS management system interface: Basic information of mothers and infants will be prioritized from the HIS system, and some nursing orders can also be synchronized into this system.

2.1 Software Platform

In addition to achieving the function of patient identification, the identification of newborns also needs to be matched between the mother and the baby, as well as between the baby and the nursing staff. There are management loopholes in labeling infants separately, which cannot prevent malicious human exchange. Therefore, it is best to identify the relationship between the newborn baby and its mother, and use the same coding or other means to connect the mother and child. When there is a temporary transfer of infant care rights between hospital staff and mothers, both parties should conduct inspections simultaneously to ensure the correct mother child pairing, and ensure that only medical personnel who have paired have the right to carry the baby out of the safe area.

2.2 Hardware equipment

The hardware of the hospital’s mother and baby RFID wristband management system mainly consists of the following parts:

Anti theft tag: This tag can be recognized from a distance. Babies and mothers use wrist strap tags, and caregivers can wear card style tags;

Exit detector: a tag signal collector installed at the main entrance and exit;

Signal detector: a tag signal collector installed in the ward;

Control host (PC) and monitoring client: installed in nursing workstations, security monitoring centers, and mother’s wards.

The four major components of the system can form a tight security network system. As the anti-theft tags move, the system provides real-time alarms in areas where the anti-theft tags (irreplaceable) are not allowed to move, pass through, or remain. The system issues an alarm and provides the reason for the alarm and relevant information.

3、 System functions

1) Wrist strap management

Provide distribution, binding, and maintenance functions for baby wristbands, mother or family wristbands, and caregiver tags, and establish exclusive electronic tag files for newborns and mothers. And you can also view historical wristband records, which use non repeating unique numbers to avoid incorrect holding. For the convenience of visual recognition, basic information of the baby can be pasted on the wristband, such as parents’ name, date of birth, gender, nurse’s name, etc.

2) Real time monitoring

Maternal infant interaction: When the mother wears a button label, she can actively request to view the baby’s status by pressing the special label button. The ward display screen will automatically display the monitoring screen of her baby, displaying the current position and nursing status information of the baby.

Anti theft alarm: Signal detectors are installed in the ward area, entrance and exit of the ward, and important external channels to keep track of the baby’s position in real time. If the baby leaves the ward or ward without permission, the alarm will be activated immediately. Depending on the alarm level, it can appear simultaneously at the nursing station and security monitoring center, and sound an alarm to the mother’s wristband.

Anti hugging error: When the baby appears in the same area as other unbound mothers or caregivers, the system will analyze based on the pre-set anti hugging logic, issue warning prompts, and automatically analyze whether the baby is hugged incorrectly. Nurses can also compare and confirm through mobile terminals.

Label anti tampering: The label worn by infants has an anti tampering function. If the label is intentionally removed, the monitoring center will be immediately notified and an audible alarm will be issued.

Video linkage: The system monitoring platform can be linked with the hospital’s video network, and when an alarm occurs, the camera in the alarm area can be immediately switched to view the video image of the alarm area.

3) Infant care management

Check in and check out: When a baby needs to leave the ward due to bathing, emergency care, or other factors, it needs to be checked out through a handheld terminal or on a PC console, authorized to leave. Otherwise, an alarm will be triggered, and check-in will be automatically given when returning to the ward.

Baby Care Record: The system matches nursing staff with a handheld mobile nursing workstation. During the nursing process, nursing staff can scan mother and baby wristbands through the mobile workstation to perform nursing operations. The system will record all bedside nursing services, and can also automatically record nursing staff’s inspection records by identifying their tags.

4) Comprehensive query

Comprehensive query can provide detailed information of mother and baby based on wristbands, mother’s name, bed number, and baby’s date of birth, as well as historical record query functions such as alarm events, personalized services, and nursing records.

5) Monitoring of infant care environment

Baby friendly area temperature and humidity monitoring: By installing temperature and humidity sensors, temperature and humidity data in the ward and baby friendly area can be collected and displayed in real-time on the monitoring platform, providing a more comfortable nursing environment and monitoring shower water temperature. Currently, the water temperature in the baby shower pool and swimming pool is determined by the feelings of the nursing staff themselves. Different nursing staff have different experience values. To ensure that the water temperature is within a reasonable range, the system provides a water temperature tester, which is displayed on the monitoring platform to provide nursing basis. When the water temperature is too high or too low, the system automatically generates an alarm prompt.

6) Personalized services

For mothers and family members, baby wristbands have certain commemorative value. At the same time, through technical means, baby features such as photos and hand shapes can be sprayed onto the wristbands. By building this system, more personalized services can be provided for babies.

4、 Application significance

1) Improve the level of hospital informatization and intelligent management, laying a solid foundation for the construction of higher and more comprehensive informatization in hospitals;

2) Prevent patients and infants from being wrongly identified and receiving incorrect treatment;

3) Provide wireless help function for patients to improve the level of humanized medical services;
